Leaving is a luxury. I hope people who have the ability to do so appreciate it.

You are correct. It is a luxury with a lot of risk involved. It is still a decision I do not regret. I know families who were committed to leaving, knowing they would have to change their lifestyle. That was a risk they were willing to take.

The comfort of "it can't happen here" has historically been a dangerous assumption. I think people who are paralyzed with denial use this phrase or God is still in control as their defense mechanism. I find it annoying. I am

I do consultations with people wanting to move to Portugal, and right now they are all asking me, “How will we know when it’s *really* time to go?” I will be forwarding them this post. This is exactly what I tell them: be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice, and pay attention to when they start hinting at closing borders for Americans. Because North America can become North Korea real fast.

YES. Choices!! I would love to hear more about how you navigate schooling abroad. How did you decide where to enroll your little ones? My daughter is still very young (2.5) but I’m already considering my options, in Italy, Spain, and beyond.
